When my family asked what I wanted from Grandma’s home, I had just one request: the transforming spatula. Not “the spatula.” The transforming spatula.
You may have never seen a transforming spatula before. At first glance, it appears normal until you tilt it. Once tilted, the thin metal head will then flex and fan out like its shape is changing. The first time I saw it, I thought it was bent; and then it flared a little bit and I got it. It wasn’t broke. It was smart.
Transforming Spatula Introduction
This is a transforming spatula. This is a very thin, slotted fish turner. It’s designed to slide under delicate foods (like fish, eggs, pancakes) without tearing them apart. My transforming spatula feels somewhat springy. The reason for this flexibility is to allow it to conform to your pan and to what ever you’re trying to lift.
Why It Is So Effective
Its length allows for it to be placed under food without pushing down on it, while the holes allow the excess oil to flow back into the pan thereby reducing the amount of suction on the item being lifted. As well, the flex of the spatula is helpful in allowing you to both lift and turn the food without damaging it. A transformable spatula is not a heavy duty burger flipper, but rather a light and precise cooking tool.
Grandma’s Kitchen Tool That Earned Its Place In Her Kitchen
My grandmother lived to 96 years old. Her kitchen contained few gadgets. She had tools that were functional, and lasted. The transforming spatula was one of these tools. The transforming spatula was not decorative. It was used, worn, and always available, which says a lot about it.
Where I Utilize My Transforming Spatula
It works well for fish, but I utilize it for all things fragile:
- Eggs
- Pancakes
- Grilled Cheese
- Cookies off of a tray
- Reheating a pizza in a pan
It is able to slide under the food without tearing it, lift the food without squishing it, and release grease while it is doing it.
Why I Asked for It After She Died
Of all the items in the house, I asked for the transforming spatula because it seemed to represent everyday life. It represented meals, routines, and her hands at the stove. It is a relatively small object that represents a lot.
I Continue To Utilize It
I do not put it away as a decorative piece. She utilized it, and therefore I do too. Every scratch on it reminds me it performed some serious function. And when it flares out and fans out, I can see her kitchen again.
How I Clean It While Preserving Its Past
- I wash it by hand approximately 90 percent of the time.
- I clean it with warm soap and a gentle scrubber.
- I do not use abrasive cleaners that remove the finish and the marks on it.
- When I am utilizing a non-stick pan, I utilize a light touch and allow it to slide.
Why It Is Better Than Many Of The Modern Spatulas
Many modern day spatulas are thicker and stiffer than older ones. However, the transforming spatula remains thinner, flexible, and precise. Additionally, it has the unique “flare” motion that causes many to question how it does it, which gives me an opportunity to share the story each time.
