Think It’s an Intercom? Guess Again – This System is Even Cooler!
This gadget is in fact part of an old audio system. These systems were put in place just for the purpose of transmitting sound in the house like music or an announcer’s voice and each room had its own volume control. The dial and the 1/4 inch jack suggests that it is for the purpose of changing the volume or connecting the device to a speaker or a headset, and different from intercom system which has two-way communication.
Such audio systems were quite elaborate in many homes of the mid-20th century and provided clear sound for listening in different rooms. Though some intercoms additionally had an audio interface, such systems with the only purpose of transmitting the sound were of this type. Such systems are still in great demand by enthusiasts and vintage audio collectors because of the high quality and craftsmanship of such systems making it a great addition to a retro home.
