This item is a P-38 can opener which is a very small but very efficient tool that was used by the U.S. military during World War II and onwards. This small, portable and collapsible metal tool was used by the soldiers to open their canned food in the battle field and due to its simplicity and effectiveness it became very popular.
The tip of the P-38 is pointed, folding and is used to pierce theupper part of a can and the rest of the P-38 is used as a handle. It was rather small which made it portable and many a times it was hanged around the neck with dog tags or hung on a key chain. Known as the “John Wayne” can opener by the soldiers, this tool became one of the most famous items used in the army.
Nonetheless, the P-38 is a favorite among collectors as well as survivalists for its coziness and reliability even if it is small. Nowadays it is rather a symbolic representation of its role in the history of warfare and a rather efficient and compact instrument.
