The Reveal Is Completely Random.

Source: Reddit
I have to admit, I’ve seen some pretty strange, vintage items before, but this flip-up wizard door knocker was different enough to get my attention. This is a brass, wizard face attached to a small wooden plaque. When you lift it up, there’s no mistaking his judgmental gaze at how well or poorly you’re knocking. Then, you just flip him back down and – seriously – there is a crustacean under the wizard. Whether it is a crab or crawdad, it is the type of surprise that will give the visitor a smile as soon as they see it.
What Is It?
A flip-up wizard door knocker is essentially two components:
- The wizard face is the movable component which is lifted and dropped.
- The crustacean is the striker plate (the moving component) that is struck by the wizard to create the knocking sound.
Therefore, “the hidden crab” is not a compartment hidden behind the wizard; it is actually the surface that the wizard strikes to produce the sound that is intended to be heard when someone knocks. In other words, the “joke” is built right into the door knocker itself.

Why it Is So Satisfying to Use
Typically, door knockers are produced using a heavier brass (or a brass-toned material), and this added weight is important to the function of the door knocker. When you raise the wizard and then drop it, you will hear a real knock; the sound will be sharp, firm and unmistakable. The wooden backer provides additional mounting security for the door knocker while framing it to resemble an interesting piece of outdoor decor.
Why it Feels Like the Good Old Days
There is an obvious personality associated with hardware such as this. While it serves a purpose, it also wants to provide entertainment. During the time that people chose elements of their home based upon whether they provided enjoyment rather than whether they complemented all of the other elements perfectly, something such as this would have been a logical choice.
Honestly, I miss that. The simple act of opening the door and seeing that someone is visiting is turned into a brief experience. Lift the wizard. See the crustacean. Smile. Knock.

Quick Care Tips
If you prefer the aged appearance of the door knocker, do not polish it excessively.
- Use a soft cloth to dust it.
- If necessary, wipe gently with mild soap.
- Be sure to dry quickly, particularly around the area of the wood.
The patina developing in the crevices is a large part of what adds to the appeal. A wizard should appear slightly dramatic.
If you have one of these types of door knockers, install it where it can be used by people. These door knockers are not meant to be stored away in a box. They are meant to be installed on doors, performing their unique function.
