The Old Tool That Still Makes Sense

Okay — I’ll admit it. The first time I saw a Stocking Donner, I’m pretty sure I would have guessed it wrong.
It kinda resembles one of those weird old tools you might find lying around in a kitchen drawer, a sewing box, or maybe in a collection of miscellaneous “mystery” gadgets you found in the garage. Once I figured out what it was, however, the design made total sense.
Stocking Donners are tools that assist people in putting on socks (especially compression socks) without having to bend over as far. That might not sound very glamorous, but it actually does solve a very real problem. And I will say that I really enjoy old tools that simply do one thing and do it extremely well.
What It Does
The concept is very basic.
First, you place the sock over the frame. Next, you place your foot inside the sock and then use the handles to pull the sock onto your foot. That’s it!
No battery required, no moving parts and no fuss.
The stocking donner can be helpful for individuals who suffer from Arthritis, Back Pain, Limited Mobility, or those who are recovering from Surgery. As many know, compression socks can be quite tight and somewhat annoying to wear, thus the stocking donner gives individuals a much simpler method of getting dressed.

Why It Matters
What I think is the best aspect of the stocking donner is how practical it is.
It gave individuals a method to accomplish a normal daily task by themselves. That is important. While getting dressed may seem relatively unimportant until it becomes a challenge, a tool like this can greatly improve an individual’s ability to dress himself/herself.
This is also part of the reason why I believe it represents such a great example of an “old days” type of item. It was designed to help; not to impress. It did not require style points. All it had to do was function.
Why People Forget About Them
Most people today do not immediately recognize a stocking donner when they see one. I understand where people are coming from.
However, if you find a stocking donner in an older home, there is a small story to tell. Someone used it. Most likely, frequently. It probably hung in a closet or was located near a chair, ready to make dressing easier for someone.
I always find objects like this interesting. They were certainly not decorative or particularly stylish. They were simply functional.
Final Thought
In my opinion, the stocking donner is a rather unassuming tool that, nonetheless, deserves more recognition than it receives.
To me, the stocking donner is a reminder that some of the best household items of the past were simply functional, durable, and thoughtful. They addressed everyday problems in a manner that did not call attention to itself.
And yes, even today, it still has a slightly mechanical appearance that makes it look like it was designed to wrestle socks into submission. Which, to be fair, is essentially its purpose.
