The Hidden Detail I Didn’t Expect

The first time I touched this, I thought I was getting a cute little figurine. Then my hand did one of those “little whoas” because it is a lot heavier than it appears. It is big enough to fit into my palm, however the rock base makes it appear as if it will get things done.

At first appearance, it is simple. A metal cat lying on a book, with its paw reaching for a ball. This type of behavior is classic for cats, create chaos and then appear innocent. However, what is surprising is that it is not simply a decorative piece. It is an old desk item used as a vintage cat memo clip paperweight, which functions.

What It Is and How It Works

That “book” is really a lever. When you press down on it, a spring clip at the bottom opens. Place a small note or a few sheets of paper inside the clip. Release the clip and it tightly holds the paper(s) in place. The large rock base at the bottom of the unit prevents the entire unit from moving, thus functioning as a paperweight.

As such, it does both. Clip and Weight. Desk items were often designed to accomplish two tasks (clip and weight).

Why People Were Using These Items

When all communication was through paper, there was always a need for a place to store the urgent documents (phone message slips, bills, reminders, receipts). An old cat memo clip paperweight kept these small stacks of documents out of the way, right in front of you, and would not become lost under other papers on your desk.

Odd Lettering on Sides of Book

There are letters/words on the sides of the “book”, but they are in a script, and they probably weren’t intended to be easily read. Your best bet for identifying the manufacturer would be to check underneath the base or on the metal hardware. Sometimes you can find a makers mark, country of origin, or patent information.

Why I Still Enjoy It

It is functional, it is strong, and it has personality. I would use it to keep a short to-do list or a bill I didn’t want to “lose”. To me, a dramatic little cat watching over your notes is far better than a plain plastic clip.
