I saw a bent metal handle poking through the floor in a closet during a home renovation project and it seemed like just another example of an old house leaving some random clue behind. In fact, the handle reminded me of a typical water shutoff lever you might find in older homes.
Most old houses have random stuff left behind and it’s your job to figure it out.
After looking down to see what it was attached to, it was obvious. The metal handle was for a main water shut off valve located in the crawl space. A previous owner didn’t want to crawl into the crawl space to shut the water off, so he made a simple way to turn it on/off from the closet above using a water shutoff lever.
That’s a pretty good fix.

I think this is interesting because it tells us something about the people who previously occupied this home. They had a problem and they fixed it, they didn’t do anything elaborate. They used whatever worked best.
