No One Knew What It Was

Grandpa’s shop contained a small metal cabinet, not unlike a Kardex visible file cabinet, in a corner of the shop near the large machine. Hung above the machine were two lanterns casting shadows on the walls. The metal cabinet, like a small refrigerator, had four doors. Each door contained one pull-out drawer and a sliding door at the bottom.

The drawers were labeled with different territories: “Territory 1 – Shaddick” and “Territory 2 – Miller.” Each drawer had a small hinge so it would lay flat when pulled out. This protected the stones inside the drawer from getting damaged during the transporting process. This way of storing the stones worked perfectly for lapidary work.

Learning More About the Cabinet

Later I researched and learned that the cabinet originally was a Kardex visible file cabinet. Kardex made many of these types of file systems. These file systems were made of index cards or forms that went into hinged trays. Once you closed the file cabinet, the tray would lie flat against the interior of the cabinet. However, once you opened the file cabinet, the tray would pop-up allowing you to see and access your information quickly.

These systems were used in a variety of ways by numerous industries, including medical offices, libraries, and businesses. They helped track patient files, sales data, and/or inventory.

How the File System Was Successful

Due to the durability of the Kardex file systems, they were able to stack them on top of one another. They could also add to them as needed. In addition, due to the modular design of the systems, users could easily re-configure and increase the number of drawers.

New Life in Lapidary

It seems that my grandfather either didn’t have the original mechanisms to hold the index cards/forms or he took them out. Regardless, he used the cabinet. He no longer used it to store paperwork. Instead, he used it to store his rock slabs.

The size of the drawers were perfect for storing and organizing delicate items. The metal frame provided protection from dust and damage to the items stored in the cabinet.

Tools That Are Durable and Flexible

Despite the fact that the cabinet shows some wear (the paint is chipped, the labels are faded, and the edges have been smoothed), the cabinet still works very well today. The drawers still move smoothly. Also, the mechanism that allows the drawer to lie flat while it is closed still functions properly.

This tool is an example of how well-designed tools can be adapted to serve multiple uses over a long period of time. No matter where the tool came from, if it is well-made, it will be useful for a long time.

An Object with a Rich History

Every time I open the drawers of this Kardex visible file cabinet, I do not just see beautiful examples of polished stone. I see a tool that has served multiple purposes. It has passed from hand to hand between multiple people. This Kardex visible file cabinet was not made obsolete. Rather than that, it has been given a second life and has become a part of a multi-generational family history.
