It Still Works Like Magic

I found this old vintage egg and sausage slicer in the back of the drawer in my kitchen about 2 weeks ago – you know that drawer. The one full of fast food menus, 5 bottle openers, a lone battery, and a lost potato peeler. So, I saw it and remembered where I saw it before.

Man, that brought back a lot of memories.

The Mysterious Metal Thing From My Grandmother’s Drawer

You would think something made out of stainless steel, with sharp little “shark” like teeth, and two little loop handles to act as scissors, would be used for repairing cars or protecting yourself from evil toast. But, no — it is a slicer. A slicer of soft foods, mainly, such as eggs, sausages, and sometimes mushrooms if you want to go wild.

My grandmother owned one exactly like this, and she used it all the time. Every Saturday morning she would boil dozens of eggs, and then use her egg slicer to create perfectly sliced eggs. Then, she would place the sliced eggs on top of buttered toast, add a pinch of salt & pepper and that was breakfast. There were no avocados. No microgreens. Just eggs, toast, and love.

Slicing, Twisting and Feeling Like a Pro

I remember the first time she allowed me to use it. I was approximately 6 years old. I held onto the rings like I was going to launch a rocket ship. She handed me a hard-boiled egg, reminded me to please not cut myself (a classic grandma moment) and I twisted.

Perfect egg petals. I was hooked.

There was something satisfying about it. Still is, actually. To slice an egg or sausage, simply place it in the center of the middle ring, hold the loops and twist. The little “teeth” will glide through like butter and you will end up with a neat little stack of perfectly sliced items that makes you feel more confident than you really are.

Just…Works

The greatest thing about this egg slicer? It does not require charging. No batteries. No screens. No YouTube videos. Simply, good ol’ fashioned steel and good design. When is the last time you purchased a kitchen appliance that just worked without needing to upgrade its software or download an app?

This slicer has survived at least three moves, two relationships, and at least one incident involving a rogue bratwurst. It still works perfectly after all these years.

More Than Eggs and Sausages

Of course, the vintage egg and sausage slicer works perfectly for slicing eggs and sausages. I’ve also sliced strawberries. Peeled bananas. Even sliced a piece of soft cheese (which was a disaster… do not attempt).

It is the type of tool that does not scream “look at me.” However, it is always there when you need it. Quietly reliable. Like a friend who never forgets your birthday.

In the Drawer–and Still in Action

I understand there are better appliances available today. Egg slicers with wires, plastic handles, and all sorts of new-fangled features. But, none of them have that same “solid” feel. None of them remind me of standing on a step stool in my grandmother’s kitchen and attempting to perform my “job.”

Old tools like this are not only functional. They are personal. They’ve experienced many things with us. Holiday meals, lazy weekend breakfasts, and quick weekday lunches before school. Old tools carry more than function. They carry memories.

Do Not Toss It

If you see one of these old egg slicers at a thrift store or buried in your parents’ kitchen, do not throw it away. Wash it. Get a hard-boiled egg. Twist. You will get perfect slices, and possibly a flood of memories also.

Some times the best tools are not the ones with fancy features. Sometimes they are the tools that quietly performed their duties and remained around long enough to become part of your history.
