If You Know This, You’re Over 40

Before apps and digital tools made promises of the “perfect” sleep, a small beige dome worked quietly behind the scenes to provide just what most needed. The Marpac Sleep Mate was one of the first white noise machines created to assist individuals in falling asleep and staying asleep. This machine contained no screen, no light – only a soft hum.

A Mechanical White Noise Maker from the 1960s

Marpac introduced the Sleep Mate in the early 1960s. As opposed to modern white noise machines that utilize recorded sounds, the Sleep Mate produced white noise through an internal fan. The fan ran continuously to produce a soothing “vrrrrr” and “wsshhh” sound. Although the fan did circulate some air, the device was designed to make noise, not to cool the area.

White noise generated by the machine is constant and natural. The background hum will also mask barking dogs, traffic or hallway chatter.

Built to Last

Although the Marpac Sleep Mate design is quite simple and functional; the machine includes a circular, vented dome, a two-speed toggle switch and a long cord. The base of the machine is often lined with green felt to prevent it from slipping or scratching. The durable metal casing of the machine continues to withstand the test of time. In fact, there are several of the original units that have been used for over 40 years without malfunction.

To alter the frequency of the white noise you simply need to twist the exterior housing of the machine. If you prefer a deeper hum, turn the housing clockwise; if you prefer a higher pitch, turn it counterclockwise. The user controls every aspect of the device through analog operation.

Still in Production After 60 Years

As a result of the white noise it produced, the Marpac Sleep Mate quickly became popular among working night shifts, new parents, and all those needing uninterrupted sleep. The consistent white noise helped block sudden noises which may have otherwise disrupted the sleep of users.

In today’s market, the same manufacturer continues to manufacture a newer version of the Marpac Sleep Mate under the name Yogasleep Dohm. While the interior of the machine has undergone slight changes, the overall design remains very similar to the original. There has been a continued demand for the product since its release.

Quiet classic

While the Marpac Sleep Mate is not flashy, it does not attempt to perform multiple functions. For hour after hour it consistently provides the same white noise. Due to its focus on functionality, it has become a staple item in homes around the world.

Individuals who grew up with the Marpac Sleep Mate will often remember its consistent hum as part of their bedtime routine. When you come across one of these devices while thrifting or digging through an attic, it feels like you’ve uncovered a small piece of history that is still working and still producing the same sound it did when it was brand new.
