Found at a Flea Market… What Is This?

Source: Reddit
The flea market has a lot of hidden secrets. That’s what makes shopping so exciting. You come home thinking you’re going to find an old lamp or a record collection, but you end up finding a box of small black and brown balls with holes in them; these vintage bocce balls look as though they’ve got a story to tell.
This was the case here.
As soon as I took a closer look at the balls, I noticed that their color, size, and stitching along the middle were all the same. Therefore, I assumed these to be vintage bocce balls, or part of the lawn games family from years ago. As soon as that clicked, they went from being random pieces of furniture to a portion of someone’s outdoor memories.
Why I Love Vintage Bocce Balls
I love vintage bocce balls because they are completely unremarkable. They were not made to wow anyone. They were created to be played with, thrown, rolled, scratched and tossed back into a box, and then brought out again the next summer.
I believe you can see this history on them. Their scratches, their wear, and their mottled finish. For many new sports products, that extra bit of character has been lost.
Let’s face it. Backyard bocce wasn’t ever about the game itself. It was about the people playing the game. There was always one person who became way too serious about the game. There was always one person who would argue whether a particular ball was closer to the target. There was always one person who turned a casual backyard game into a major tournament.
That is precisely why we loved backyard bocce.

A Small Flea Market Purchase, Full of Summer Nights
Vintage bocce balls reminded me of the type of fun people once created for themselves without much of anything. A spot of grass, a few friends and enough enthusiasm to argue and laugh for an hour or two.
That is what makes this purchase worthy of recognition. This isn’t unique or flashy. It does not have to be. It represents memories of warm summer nights, family get-togethers and simple backyard fun.
At times a flea market find doesn’t have to be expensive to be meaningful.
At times it is simply a box of vintage bocce balls.
Somehow, that is enough.
