There is no reason to believe that the smallest objects are not the ones which hold the most heart. The first time I laid eyes on this small brass burner for incense I was flooded by a rush of memories about my own childhood.
It’s certainly not fancy. It’s a small brass piece that probably could be used as either a burner for incense, or an oil lamp, with rounded shapes and star cuts in it. That is why I love it so much. As you mentioned, many old household objects did not have to advertise their presence in order to contribute to the warmth of a space; they simply sat in the background and added to the overall sense of being at home.
The Cozy Glow of Brass and Light
I think there is a quality of brass that cannot be duplicated by newer decorative elements. It has a softness to it, a familiarity to it, and a “lived-in” quality to it. And then I look at the stars, and suddenly the entire item seems almost magical.
If this was a burner for incense, I can picture the smoke wafting from it through its very small holes. Or if it functioned as an oil lamp, I would assume the light was warm and comforting. Not harsh or overpowering. Simply a warm, gentle glow, one that invites you to slow down for a few moments.

This is precisely why we tend to remember our experiences with these objects. These objects transport us back to the older houses we visited, the family gatherings we participated in, and the quieter areas where we enjoyed scents and softer lights. One object can evoke memories of an entire area. How funny is that?
I also think the scents associated with these objects play a huge role in transporting us to the past. Familiar smells can instantly take us back to our pasts before we even know it. In an instant we are thinking of grandparents, holiday dinners, or a house that always seemed peaceful and inviting.

To me, the star cutouts also add to the magic of this object. The details such as the star cutouts are what make an ordinary brass item into something special. Many older homes had details like this. Enough detail to create charm in the day-to-day experience of living, but not enough to overwhelm.
This is why I appreciate this piece the most. It is not merely an incense burner or oil lamp. It reminds us of a different time — a time when things were slower and warmer. While it may be a small object, it is also a reminder of a simpler time when life was less hurried and there was a greater emphasis on creating a feeling of peace and comfort in your home.
