A Small Vintage Mystery

Source: Reddit

I recently stumbled upon this beautiful, vintage door harp while thrift shopping, and for a brief moment I wasn’t sure what I was holding. It looked to be some sort of handmade, miniature instrument. The kind of thing you’d typically see hanging in a quaint, cozy cottage versus sitting alone on a thrift store shelf among various knick-knacks, and old photographs.

At that point, I finally figured out that it was actually an old fashioned door chime. And once I did, I fell in love with it even more. There’s something humorous and endearing about an item designed solely to enhance the appearance of a door chime. Not smart. Not loud. Prettier. A vintage door harp seems to be one of the many items that people purchased as a means to create a feeling of warmth and welcome within their home. Honestly, I miss that type of decorating.

What is a Vintage Door Harp?

A vintage door harp is a decorative chime that is attached either directly to the door, or positioned nearby. As the door swings open or closed, the strings of the harp will vibrate, creating a soft melodic tone.

Simple concept. Wonderful results.

Many of these types of items were created from wood and painted by hand. Many feature flowers, birds, or folk art. This particular item features a similar hand crafted appearance, which is probably the reason I immediately noticed it. It does not appear to be mass produced, nor does it seem to be perfect. It appears to be personal.

I think that is why we can give objects such as this more character due to the minor flaws (a slight unevenness in the paint detail, a slight wear to the edges) that exist. No major flaws. Simply enough to let you know someone made it, used it, and decided to keep it for a reason.

Why Does a Vintage Door Harp Feel Nostalgic?

I believe a vintage door harp is considered to be nostalgic for two main reasons.

First, a vintage door harp is an example of how homes during a certain time period had many small details incorporated into daily life. Opening a door became a pleasant experience.

That kind of thing sticks out today.

Today, most sounds we hear are harsh, electronic, or easily ignored. A soft chime sounds different. Calm. Intentional. Adds ambiance without drawing attention to itself.

Older home decor did many things well. It did not attempt to impress others. Older home decor simply made a house feel nice to live in. A vintage door harp is a great example of that. It is decorative, but it also performs a function. Makes an ordinary action, opening a door, become a pleasing experience.

And I love that.

Why do Thrift Shopper’s Notice Items Such as This?

An item such as this is the perfect example of a thrift store find that piques people’s curiosity. At first, you’re not entirely sure what the item is. Once you determine the item’s purpose, it seems to become even better.

A vintage door harp has a mystique, charm, and ties directly to everyday life from a previous era. It is not a grand antique. It is a common household item. An item that people used. That aspect of a vintage door harp makes it feel more personal to me.

That is also why items such as these are difficult to pass up. They tell a story, albeit quietly. You begin to wonder where the door harp hung previously. Perhaps next to a kitchen door. Perhaps in a hallway. Possibly on the back door that would remain open throughout the summer months. I may be being somewhat idealistic, but that is half the fun of thrift shopping. One unusual little object is discovered and your mind begins to write the entire history of the object.

Long-Lasting Charm of a Vintage Door Harp.

Each time I view this vintage door harp, I understand why people continue to adore finding items such as this. Handmade appearance, functional, decorative, and has an abundance of old world charm.

In addition to the above qualities, it also reminds me that the average household objects of yesterday possessed a gentler personality. Not just useful. But intended to make a home feel welcoming as well.

That is probably the reason why this little thrift store find stuck with me. A vintage door harp is a simple object, but it brings together music, craftsmanship, and nostalgia in a manner that is both surprising and very unique.

And that is the greatest type of thrift store find. The unexpected. The unplanned. The one you could not walk away from.
