A Small Detail Worth Seeing

A train station has as one of its primary goals to get people moving. Many people spend time waiting for a train or bus checking platforms, and looking at clocks. But it is often the smaller things we notice most about a particular spot. This is why I find the rain chain at the train station to be such an interesting piece of design.
When I looked at the rain chain at first, I thought it was just a strange-looking chain hanging off of a big metal beam. However, once I understood what it did, it became so much more than that. The rain chain is a very simple thing; however, it totally changed my perception of the overall experience of the station.
What Is a Rain Chain?
A rain chain directs the water falling from the roof of a building down to the ground. In many ways, it serves as a substitute for a traditional downspout. As opposed to running rain water through a sealed pipe, the rain chain allows the water to flow down the chains themselves.
The rocks at the end help with splash protection and provide structural support to facilitate good drainage. While the idea behind the rain chain is very practical in nature, it also provides an additional viewable method to manage rainwater. There are now several places where you can visually see how the rain water flows out.
This Visibility Makes It Memorable
It’s this visibility that helps me remember the rain chain at the train station. When considering drainage systems in buildings, most are completely hidden within the structure of the building. While they accomplish their task of removing excess water from a building, no one typically ever notices them. On the other hand, a rain chain accomplishes the exact same job while creating visual texture and interest in addition to functionality.
If there is no rain on a particular day, it appears as if it is nothing more than another clean architectural detail. However, during periods of rain, it comes alive as the water cascades down each link before dropping into the stones beneath. A function that is normally boring and mundane becomes an integral part of the visual design of a public space.
Adding a Little Personality
In many cases, public spaces appear dull and uninteresting because everything seems to serve a single functional purpose. Even though materials such as steel, concrete, glass, and brick all have specific functions, they can also contribute to a sense of “coldness” when every detail is strictly based upon pure functionality. The rain chain represents a different type of detail. It softens the environment without altering the entire appearance of the building.
Therefore, details like this one do matter. These details create an identity for a given location. An individual will likely never recall each sign or platform number at a train station, yet they may remember the chain suspended from the metal beam and the stones located directly underneath it.
Types of Details People Never Forget
As long as we’ve had train stations, there has always been an abundance of details that people seem to remember. Large clocks, worn-out benches, large brick walls, and older metal signs can all create character for an area. The rain chain at the train station fits into this same group. Although it is both functional and beautiful (and therefore serves two purposes), it offers individuals traveling through the station something new to observe.
This aspect of it is one of its greatest appeals. It encourages observation. Individuals passing through the station may initially question what the rain chain is used for. Once that question is answered, they realize that it simply directs rainfall away from the area in which it falls – in a manner that appears thoughtful.
Beauty in Every Day Places
The rain chain at the train station illustrates how even something as practical as a rain chain can add beauty to common areas. It is neither an ornate nor extravagant feature. The rain chain is not intended to be the cause of someone visiting the station. Nevertheless, it lends some personality and vitality to the building.
There are times when less than extraordinary features can become enough to turn ordinary locations into ones that people remember. The rain chain does precisely that. It transforms a routine job into something that people can see, appreciate, and retain in memory.
