A Handy Throwback to Simpler Times

Source: Reddit
A small item can tell a big story. This is how I felt when I saw a vintage wooden step stool with a handle at Goodwill. It was a small, slender piece of furniture that had a very tall back and hand painted flowers on it.
I initially thought of it as a kid’s chair. It was about a foot above the ground. It had a very narrow seat and an extremely tall backrest. However, the design made me realize it was intended to be a step stool with a handle to make it easy to lift and move.
For Every Day Use
In homes there are frequently tall cabinets and high shelves. Instead of having to pull out a large cumbersome ladder, many families have used small wooden stools such as this one — they could be easily stored and quickly grabbed and are strong enough to hold a single step up to the high shelf.
The tallest part of the step stool is the handle. The handle allows you to lift the step stool upright without having to bend over and makes it usable for anyone that has mobility issues or just needs a little extra help reaching something on a high shelf.

Functional And Decorative
The hand painted flower design gives it a certain charm. This type of folk art was common in mid century home goods which allowed functional items to become decorative as well as functional. These types of stools were usually kept out in a kitchen or hallway and blended into the house instead of being put away.
You would typically see one of these in a family kitchen, always close by to complete a number of small tasks — getting a baking dish out of the upper cabinet or switching the calendar on the wall.
Still Functional
This design will continue to function. A vintage wooden step stool with a handle can fit into smaller spaces, add a decorative element and meet a number of practical needs. They work well in kitchens, closets, laundry rooms etc., wherever you may need a quick lift.
They are easy to move, durable and do not take up a lot of space. The type of item that will earn its keep without requiring attention.

A Part of History That Is Still Functional
The step stool represents a time in history where household items were made with care and consideration. It meets a purpose, but also has some personality to it — something that is handmade, hand-painted and meant to last.
A simple, smart design that is still useful today.
