Before the era of electronic payments and GPS systems people had to keep change handy while driving a car. For toll roads, parking meters or even buying a quick snack, one had to make sure that he or she had some coins at hand. The Corolla for instance has a defined compartment for holding coins on the car to prevent them from moving all over the car. Although the coin holder does not seem like a big deal, it is something that many drivers of a certain generation can appreciate since they still remember when coins were used instead of cards. It is a reminder of a time when cars were fitted with features that made sense for people who used them for their day to day tasks.
Today, with the shift in automotive design and people’s driving habits and preferences, it is rare to see such features as the coin holder in new vehicles, and that is why this holder represents a certain concept of car design where even the smallest comforts were not overlooked.
