What Is This Weird Ring?

Source: Reddit

The very first time i ever laid eyes on this thing i was certain it was not a children’s game. Nope. I immediately thought “tiny arena.” A wooden octagon. Grass or turf inside. Sides high enough to make Kids want to climb to get back down. No sign. No lines. No indication. Just another piece of equipment on an elementary school playground, as if everyone else had collectively decided not to tell us about it either. This is exactly how the gaga ball pit mystery works. If you never played with one growing up, it just looks stupid. Sandbox, corral, and place for second-graders to resolve disputes they made during lunch.

You go through the process of finding out it’s called the gaga ball pit and then instantly it all makes sense.

How Adults Confuse Themselves

Kids would probably walk into this thing and start jumping around.

Adults take guesses.

I certainly did. Is it a mini hockey rink? I doubt it. Could be some type of outdoor classroom? That doesn’t seem likely. Did the school decide to use failed garden beds as a new way to teach gardening? Possible. Is it some sort of recess fight club? Yes…it does visually appear that way.

And that’s why we can say that the gaga ball pit mystery is funny. To an adult (and even Kids) the thing looks intense. But there is actually a much easier answer than that.

The Answer Is Better Than The Guess

Gaga ball is basically a louder version of dodgeball. It plays the same way except instead of trying to hit each player anywhere, you have to try and hit them under the knees.

When a player gets hit below the knees, they’re out.

That’s it.

The walls help keep the balls bouncing around; the odd shape creates crazy bounces; the confined area keeps everything going quickly. Not complicated at all. one ball. Kids with excess energy running around.

Honesty, that’s probably why schools are fond of them.

Why It Works

As soon as you visualize a typical elementary school recess session, the gaga ball pit mystery goes away.

There is room for many Kids to fit into the gaga ball pit. The game starts fast. There isn’t anything a kid has to learn before he/she/they can join in. Kids will run, duck, yell, scream, and then begin another round of gaga ball. This is essentially all the magic of gaga ball pits.

Plus, it has that classic old-school playground vibe i enjoy. Simple structures. Simple games. Nothing excessive. It brings back memories of those types of recess sessions (four-square, tether-ball, kick-ball) that became huge hits with next to nothing but a few pieces of equipment.

It fits perfectly into that category.

Why It Feels So Strange At First

An empty gaga ball pit feels strange.

That is really the entire problem.

Most playground items only have value when being used by Kids. Bars are just bars until someone hangs upside-down from them while swinging on monkey bars. A four square court is simply marked squares until recess starts. Ditto here.

Unless you can envision ten screaming Kids crammed inside the gaga ball pit yelling back-and-forth on whether the ball touched someone’s sneaker, the gaga ball pit mystery persists.

Once you see that image in your mind, the confusion fades away.

The Answer Is Better Than The Guess

Not a fighting ring.

Although it sure appears to be from a distance.

A gaga ball pit is what it is, and this answer is much more wholesome than our initial Guess. Gaga ball is meant to be a chaotic, social and rapid-fire activity suited for elementary school-aged Kids. When you finally understand this, the bizarre-looking wooden octagon no longer seems arbitrary — it now appears to be very logical.

I think my favorite aspect of the gaga ball pit mystery is the complete confusion and utter bewilderment transforms itself into an extremely positive conclusion: young people still have fun playing simple games at recesses filled with chaos and excitement, and they still love having opportunities to shout “i wasn’t out!”
