Did This Always Feel A Bit Mysterious?

As soon as I see something like that, I immediately think of those tiny scented packets that many people would put in their cars for years. They weren’t anything special. Simply a small sac quietly putting a pleasant, fresh or at least neutralizing odor into the car instead of smelling like last week’s fast food and old car upholstery.
This is why scented car sachet memories are so quick. It’s a very small item, yet it evokes a whole time period of family vehicles, daily commutes and that one distinct smell of almost every automobile.
Smell Brings It All Back
What I remember most is the smell. There is something weird about how smells can be stored in our memories. In a split second, you are looking at a small mesh pouch, and the next you are back in the passenger seat of your parents’ car on a hot day in the afternoon, watching the world go by through the windshield as the radio plays. That’s the magic of scented car sachet memories; they bring back memories of road trips, grocery shopping, school drop-offs and those ordinary events that are more meaningful today than they ever were when you experienced them.
Something You Barely Notice When You Are Younger
That’s likely why this has a strong sense of nostalgia today. Back then, no one really noticed these little sachets; they simply existed, stashed under a seat, or hiding in a corner, doing their job quietly. Today, however, they seem to be a part of the whole ambiance of an older automobile.
I remember the automobiles of my youth being a lot more personal. A bit messy, a bit worn, always with a mixture of sun light, fabrics, dust and a soft, sweet fragrance floating around in the air. Perfect in no way. Real. And in my opinion, that is exactly why it is so memorable.
Why It Still Means Something
Older automobiles just felt more inhabited. They typically had a few random items in the glove box, a few coins rattling around in the center console, and one of these little scented sachets hidden away somewhere. Simple stuff, but it made the automobile feel comfortable, and therefore familiar.
That is why I enjoy this little pouch. It may be nothing more than a simple car deodorizer from the past. To me it represents many shared rides, routine daily activities, and the comfort of the ordinary. Small thing, great memories.
