This Antique Desk Had a Secret Hidden Under the Top

On its face, this resembles a somewhat run-of-the-mill antique oak table. It has drawers, extra wide wood top and a front piece that folds down to get more working space.
Then you notice the holes.
They sit within that enclosed central section, and only come into view when the front piece is drawn forward. Now to push the board back in, and hide the holes again.
That seems like an odd desk design choice. And it is for a very simple reason: That desk probably was never intended to be a desk in the first place.
It used to be a melodeon, but now it’s a piece of furniture.
The Desk Had a Musical Past
And an organ called the melodeon: which was a type of small reed organ for home use that gained popularity beginning in the 1800s. Rather than strings like on a piano, it generated sound by forcing air through metal reeds.
The player had learned how make that work by using pedals activated with their feet. Those pedals worked the bellows within that instrument as were supplemented by a keyboard above in use on the piece.
They were most likely a component of the pedal system. Rods or other components would have run through here that connected the pedals to the bellows inside of the unit.
And once you know that, well, the peculiar opening interjection is suddenly a lot clearer.
So what happened to the remaining bit?
The melodeon ceased performing as an instrument of music at a certain point.
Maybe the bellows wore out. Perhaps the keyboard was damaged. Or perhaps someone just figured they could use a desk more than an old organ.
For whatever reason, the musical elements had been cut out of it and the wooden cabinet was given a second life.
The pull-out board turned into an enhanced venue for writing. The drawers remained useful. The old pedal adds a whisper of what the piece once was.
The half hole you see peeking through the back one of the drawers could also be a remnant of whatever old mechanism it once had fitted.
A Desk That Has a Story Hiding In It
That is the reason used stuff, like this old furniture is such a great deal of fun.
The desk that appears to be antique but what has been reused well. Someone once played it with their feet on the pedals and played parlor or sitting room music.
Another owner later converted it into a usable writing desk.
Now, however — many years after the music has ceased — those strange holes remain to spill the beans.
