“They’re on pretty much every joist, usually located near a wall or the center beam where two perpendicular joists meet. It’s almost always 4 fingers and no thumb like someone was holding the beam up from below, so I assumed the prints are left from the oils on the workmen’s hands when they built it in 1931. Some folks have found them kind of disconcerting, but I like them. They’re an old memento from the original builders nearly 100 years ago,” – Joseph Sykes
