Childhood friends Roger Ewing and Kathy Garver both found themselves working on the CBS Studio lot in later years, with Garver starring in the sitcom Family Affair and Ewing in the hit Western Gunsmoke. Ewing, curious if he could help Garver land a role on Gunsmoke, was told it was unlikely due to an incident involving Garver’s dog urinating on James Arness’ boot on set.
Ewing’s career began with a small role on Bewitched before landing the role of Deputy Marshal Thad in season 11 of Gunsmoke, a role he held for two seasons. After leaving Gunsmoke, Ewing had only two notable film roles before intentionally retiring from acting to pursue photography.

One of Ewing’s most notable screen appearances after leaving Gunsmoke was on the popular game show The Dating Game, where he appeared as Bachelor No. 2 and was ultimately rejected by a young Lindsay Wagner, who would later become famous as the Bionic Woman.

Despite his early success in Hollywood, Ewing chose to retire from acting and lead a private life. He remains one of the few surviving stars of Gunsmoke and was even able to meet a man named Thad, who was named after his character, when he was dining at a restaurant in his hometown of Morro Bay, California.
Ewing’s story serves as a reminder that success in Hollywood doesn’t always equate to lifelong fame and fortune. Despite achieving early success, Ewing chose to step away from the limelight to pursue his passion for photography. His chance encounter with a fan named Thad also illustrates how fate can work in mysterious ways, bringing people together in unexpected and meaningful ways.

The story of Roger Ewing and his journey through Hollywood serves as a reminder that success doesn’t always look the same for everyone, and it’s okay to pursue one’s passions even if it means stepping away from the spotlight.
