The stone axe head, one of the most important inventions of early human beings, had multiple uses. Meteored from such materials as flint or basalt, it was a most useful tool in early societies. Grooved stone axes were employed for a number of purposes although they were mainly used for cutting, engraving and splitting timber. All the axes have a full groove at one of the ends to hold the axe to a wooden shaft or haft (handle). The haft here illustrated has been replaced by a more recent one. The length of the axis on the left suggests that it could have been used to cut down trees which had a diameter of more than six inches. To this end, Native Americans would have burned the trees at the base and then knock them down with an axe. Axes, adzes, and celts of smaller size were then employed to peel the bark, cut off the branches, as well as to carved the wood into articles of use for example canoe, snowshoes and supports for wigwams.
