Why Is This Sealed?

Have you ever come across a sealed clear plastic bag that contains a bunch of soft, white stuff? At first it might appear strange – somewhere in between a Q-Tip and a sewing kit – however, it is probably a jacket filling sample – remnants of when people were able to have a “hands on” view of what made up the insulating portion of their winter coat.
What Was a Jacket Filling Sample?
Brands utilized these little bags as a means of showing off the type of insulation that was in their coats. Consumers would be able to see and touch the actual material (synthetic down, polyester fill, etc.) without having to remove the jacket.
Jacket samples usually came in:
- Small, compact size (finger length)
- Sealed with a small loop to hang
- Clear plastic bag
- Branded name(s) or logo(s) printed on the outside of the plastic bag
Why They Were Important
Prior to consumers being able to read online reviews and performance specifications, these samples allowed consumers to evaluate the different coats by feeling the insulation itself. By touching the texture, loft and softness of the insulation, consumers had a simple, tangible method to determine if a coat would be warm and of good quality. Also, consumers could compare multiple jackets side by side, based solely on the insulation.
They made the insulation feel “real”, something you could put your hands on.
Who Utilized These Samples?
These samples originated with high-end and technical outdoor gear companies; however, soon after, mid-level retailers and department stores also began using these samples. Some children’s coats even came with colorful or decorative versions of these samples.
What Happened To These Samples?
As more and more consumers turned to online shopping and simpler packaging, the jacket filling samples slowly phased out. Brands now mostly utilize printed product specifications and expect customers to trust their brand reputation. The tactile element of experiencing a product prior to purchasing has largely been replaced by digital information and standardized labeling.
Still Have One?
If you’ve found one of these bags in an old drawer or still attached to an older jacket, it’s more than just a piece of packaging – it’s a small example of the retail past – a representation of how brands once linked product quality to a consumer experience.
Give that little soft puff of insulation another squeeze. That soft puff of insulation is all that remained to convince someone that they’d stay warm through the winter.
