If You Grew Up in an Old Apartment, You Might Remember This Little Box

source: Reddit

Older apartments may have a lot of items that were left behind by previous residents. Some of these things are easy to see, but no one knows what they do. That is what happened to a resident of an apartment built in the 1950s . The box was round-edged, with a simple chevron pattern on the face. However, while I could see the box had been old, I wasn’t sure what its purpose was. Was the box part of an obsolete electrical system? A former alarm? Did somebody leave the box behind?

Someone quickly identified the item as an antique door bell after the owner posted a photo of the item on Reddit’

A Doorbell From a Different Era

Before the use of current intercom systems, there was many apartments that used an electric doorbell.

Older buildings can be found with a row of mailboxes in the front lobby. There is a small button located beside each mailbox which will correspond to a specific apartment. By pressing the button the user will activate either a bell or buzzer in the corresponding apartment.

One Reddit user remembers being able to live in an apartment building built in the 1930s with the same layout. Each of the mailboxes had a button placed over it. However, the resident did not find out how these buttons were used until around ten years after moving into the apartment.

The mystery had finally been resolved when some of the local children began to use the buttons to ring the apartment doorbells.

Why Was the Vintage Apartment Doorbell in the Kitchen?

In today’s society, most individuals expect to hear a door bell ring when someone approaches their front door, or when they approach a common area inside of the building. Buildings constructed prior to modern standards were often set up differently.

The kitchen would be the most suitable place to install the bell because numerous individuals spend time in the kitchen during each day. Also, installing the bell high on the wall kept it from interfering with anything.

The small, brownish-colored lid likely protected the internal bell mechanism, while also allowing for the sound of the bell to be heard inside the room. A basic chevron design provides additional visual appeal for what is essentially a typical household appliance.

The many older versions of entry systems have been removed from service with the development of newer versions. Some of the early doorbell systems were left hanging on the wall after the system had ceased function.

A Small Reminder of Apartment Life in the Good Old Days

Finding a lost function within an old home can be very special. The small space located above your pantry may appear to have no purpose at this point in time, however there was once a function for that space.

The bell rang while you were seated in the kitchen. Therefore, you left the area of the house where you could hear the bell ring (the first floor) and proceeded down to the ground floor of the building so that you could see what was going on outside. At that time, you did not employ a cellular telephone to receive messages… A closed circuit television system to monitor people on the street, or a contemporary intercommunication system. Rather, the building had a push button in the entry way, and a bell located in your apartment.

The next time you come across a unique or unusual feature, don’t assume that it is simply an obsolete element. It may be a direct link to the day your home first stood on its foundation, and you never realized how much of your home’s past lies within this seemingly insignificant item.

And, most likely, that mysterious little box was a pretty ordinary object — a very old electrical door bell.
