Mercury flasks also known as flasks for quicksilver transportation has been widely used in various sectors especially during the mining booms. Mercury was a liquid metal used in various fields such as mining and manufacturing of scientific instruments and these strong containers were crucial for transporting the same.
Metal mercury flasks can be traced back to the periods when mercury was a very essential component in the production of precious metals particularly gold and silver through the amalgamation process. Mercury was shipped in bulk in the course of the California Gold Rush and other mining rushes, which called for sturdy and leak-proof flasks. These flasks were usually made of iron or steel and could hold 76 pounds of mercury which was a conventional measure known as a ‘flask’ of mercury.
The design of the mercury flasks was rather simple and its main principles were based on safety and reliability. Currently, mercury is known to be a dangerous substance that has negative impacts on human health and the environment, affects the nervous system and pollutes the environment. This has led to the tight restrictions of the use, handling and disposal of mercury and how mercury flasks are employed in today’s industries.
Mercury flasks are no longer in use in the present society but they are still useful in certain industries where mercury is still required in certain ways. These industries are regulated in order that the mercury contained in them does not present a health or ecological risk.
