In many backpacks manufactured in the 1990s through the early 2000s, there was a little clip attached to the top of the chest strap. What made this clip so special? One half of that clip contained a small, simple device called the “backpack whistle buckle.”
When you blow across the surface of this small plastic whistle, you produce a loud, high-pitched whistling sound. While many people have probably blown whistles before, this one is different. It serves a serious purpose designed to allow a person to signal for assistance in case of an emergency, such as being lost or injured.
Backpack Whistle Buckle Description
While a backpack whistle buckle looks much like any other chest strap clip, it contains a unique safety element. On one end of this buckle, there is a small rectangular hole, which is actually the whistle. When you blow across the opening of the hole, you will hear a loud, high-pitched sound. This sound can be heard for a great distance.
Because the whistle buckle adds safety functionality to a component of the pack (the buckle), it does not add any additional size or weight to the pack.

Also, since you do not need to worry about having a battery charged or a cell phone with adequate reception, a whistle provides a reliable means of signaling for assistance. It is most reliable when needed is most.
Some hikers used their whistles to locate other members of their party who were traveling behind them. This was especially useful in thickly forested areas. Some camp counselors and leaders even taught young campers how to properly use their whistle during safety training. There are documented examples of people becoming lost in the wilderness. Upon finding a whistle in their pack, they used it to signal for help and ultimately got rescued.
Why Are Whistle Buckles No Longer Common?
As manufacturers of backpacks continued to evolve the designs of their products, making them more streamlined and less bulky, some manufacturers chose to eliminate the whistle buckle from their designs. Since urban-style backpacks did not require a whistle, many manufacturers simply eliminated it. As more people turned to using digital technology, including GPS devices and cell phones, the need to use a whistle to find someone in distress decreased. However, many manufacturers saw the value of the whistle buckle as a secondary safety option.
Whistle Buckles Still Used Today
Even today, many manufacturers of outdoor-related gear continue to include whistle buckles in their packs. Brands such as Osprey and Deuter continue to use whistle buckles in their hiking and survival gear.
For those who spend time in the wilderness, enjoy camping or hiking, or prefer to have a low-technology backup option available, a whistle buckle remains a useful item.
A Whistle Worth Remembering
If you look at an older backpack, you may see a small rectangular hole in the buckle of the chest strap. If you try blowing across the opening of the hole, you may be surprised to discover that it still works. This small feature is a reminder of the importance of thinking about how we can create safe and functional products.
