From time to time, there it is; an object so odd, you can’t help but tilt your head and squint. This mystery metal frame is one of those curious finds. Located outdoors, there are two large round rings, connected by a rod, with a human standing holding it, like it was to be set down or moved, and in its simplest shape, one thing is for certain — it’s far enough outside the box to develop a dozen ideas.
A Stool Without a Seat?
The first guess most commonly appears to be a stool frame without a top. The height, and general dimensions, all match up, it is possible the rings may have supported a very flat seat, or, could have held a sling. After all it is simply a metal frame, but with no supported or mounting positions for a seat, which seems less likely.
Could it be a Stand?
Moving beyond the stool theory, the frame may also point to a stand or base for something larger. A large container, stabilizer or component of some sort of portable apparatus? It is made of lightweight materials, it is conceivable that it is not designed for heavy loads and is just used to steady or locate something that is circular.
Why is this so puzzling?
Part of what makes this so curious, is that it is being carried down a path, not in a shed or workshop. Was it being used for work outdoors? Being used for recreation? Or is simply being relocated from location, to location? Without the insert, we are left with no choices other than to speculate.

Objects like this mystery metal frame, are a good reminder that not all objects have recognizable purpose. Some designs are for a specific job or era, that when separated from it context, just become abstract.
Possibly a stool waiting for it’s seat? Possible stand for gear? Possible something entirely different? One fact is for sure, it is a good talking point.
