Helen Hunt: Beautiful Then, Beautiful At 59!
At 59 years old, Helen Hunt has already lived quite the life. Hunt is an award-winning actor, director, activist, and mother, just to name a few accolades. She also survived a serious car accident a few years ago and appears to have bounced right back. As the actor approaches her 60th birthday, let’s take a look back at Hunt’s impressive career and full personal life.
Hailing from California, Hunt was born to a photographer mother and director/acting coach father. Hunt began working as a child actor in the ’70s, appearing in shows including The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Swiss Family Robinson. In the ’80s, Hunt began appearing in more teen-oriented roles and in some big titles alongside some big names. Hunt’s breakout role came in 1992 when she landed a starring role in the series Mad About You, which she starred in until 1999. She won four Emmys for her role in the series, and even directed a few episodes.
Throughout the ’90s and early 2000s, Hunt continued to star in a wide range of films and television series, and won an Academy Award for Best Actress in the romantic comedy As Good as it Gets. As recently as 2020, Hunt appeared in the crime drama film The Night Clerk. Though not a ton is known about Hunt’s personal life, back in 1994, she began dating actor Hank Azaria. They married in 1999 but split less than two years later. In 2001, Hunt began dating producer Matthew Carnahan. In 2004, the couple welcomed a daughter but later separated in 2017.
In 2019, Hunt was involved in a serious car accident when the vehicle she was a passenger in was hit by another vehicle and flipped on its side. Hunt was briefly hospitalized but fortunately did not suffer any serious or long-term injuries. Helen is also an outspoken activist for multiple causes, specifically women’s rights. As reported by The Guardian, Hunt commented on how she is seeing positive movement spurred from the #MeToo Movement. “I find it funny that people are out of patience with it and it’s only been two to three years … Still, there’s a little wind at the back of people raising their hand and saying this happened or that made me uncomfortable. That’s significant, I think,” says Hunt.
Though Hunt hasn’t been as prominently in the spotlight in recent years, she’s still busy working on causes close to her heart, and enjoying friends, family, and hobbies in her personal life. I have always admired Helen Hunt, and am glad to see that she seems to be doing so well!
